Since their appearance in the 1950s, supermarkets have become a centerpiece of many cities and communities around the world. They have in fact become a local business ecosystem in their own right. Now, new technologies are making it possible to transform the local supermarket from an energy consumer to an energy producer for both the supermarket and the local community.
This transformation is already taking place and Danish companies have been involved in this development. The role of the supermarket is expanding beyond providing food and emerging as a central player of the electrified, decentralized and digitized electricity system of the future as presented by the TC in South Western Europe’s business case from Italy, France, Spain and Portugal, a region where we find some of the world’s largest supermarket chains, who are also leading the investments in this green energy transformation and redefining the state of play.
