Onshore wind energy: growing demand for Danish solutions in the U.S. Market

With the political push to reduce carbon emissions, the adoption of renewable energy projects is increasing in the U.S. As a result, the country is the second-largest wind market in the world and is expected to grow even further, which creates opportunities for Danish companies that are world-leading in the field.
More than 80.000 onshore wind turbines are installed in the U.S., making it the second-largest wind market in the world. Politically, there is a strong focus on building a clean energy economy and accelerating the clean energy transition. The new installations of onshore wind turbines are anticipated to be over 50 GW by 2030.

The onshore wind sector is expected to continue at a high level of growth in the next couple of years. In fact, the forecast indicates that there will be a new phase of growth, enabled by new policies, increased electrification, and corporate ambitions. Furthermore, since it has been a fast-developing market, wind turbine manufacturers are expanding their capabilities within hybrid solutions, such as battery, wind power, and storage.

Aftermarket solutions for aging wind turbines

Many wind turbine generators installed across the U.S. are beginning to run out of maintenance warranty. As a result, the wind turbines must either be replaced or repaired or have small and large components replaced. The industry’s present and future needs in the aftermarket present an excellent opportunity for Danish service providers to enter the U.S. market. Many Danish companies have valuable insights to help clean energy owners, operators, and original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) get the most out of their systems. Repowering is now beneficial for some aging wind farms and has immense potential, especially in a mature market such as the U.S.

Key priority for the U.S. Administration

The wind industry is currently of high interest politically in the U.S.at both the federal and state level:The Biden administration has taken action on the green transition, for example, with the Build Back Better Act (BBB), to fully seize the opportunities of a clean energy economy. BBB is vital to implement green investments and expand renewable energy sources, and subsequently deliver enough clean energy to American households.

Cleanpower 2022

More than 20 Danish companies participated in this year's Cleanpower conference in San Antonio, together with the Danish Wind Export Association (DWEA). The conference is a hub for the industry, where important issues and innovative opportunities in the renewable energy space are on the agenda. The American Clean Power Association (ACP) hosted the event with the theme "Building the Clean Energy Economy," with more than 6000 attendees.

Danish DEIF was among the exhibitors showcasing technological solutions to improve and enhance the clean energy industry.

"We consider the event essential for our activity in the U.S. As a replacement for AWEA's annual wind fair, Cleanpower allows us to promote our control solutions for the renewable energy industry. Sales of our control retrofit solutions for various turbine brands are constantly moving forward, where we extend our customer base. We look at the American renewable energy market with great confidence, as it applies all of our control solutions: wind, solar, storage, hybrid, and energy management systems"

"Denmark is widely recognized for its extensive knowledge and expertise within the wind sector. Danish companies have great opportunities in the industry for transport, logistics, installation, and maintenance work. At the Cleanpower conference, we established direct contact with stakeholders about the market and development that we otherwise couldn't. Repowering and optimizing old assets are the main focus areas to achieve the ambitions of reducing Co2 emissions and reaching the goal of transitioning to green energy. Also, expanding the grid across the U.S. is an important factor in delivering the expected green energy expansion."
