The Water Technology Alliance

The Water Technology Alliance facilities knowledge sharing between the North American and Danish water sectors to foster cross-collaboration and influence the sustainable water market of tomorrow.
 

Due to aging infrastructure and water scarcity, the importance of revitalizing the North American water sector has never been greater. The need for a sustainable plan of action is immense, particularly finding early adopters willing to look into new water technology and solutions.

For over 30 years, companies and authorities in Denmark have been working hard to develop sustainable utilities. Today, the Danish water sector is now among the most sustainable globally, with the expectancy to become energy neutral by 2030. 

The Water Technology Alliance (WTA) is an outreach program providing specialized know-how on innovative water technology solutions. Our mission is to build bridges between the North American and Danish water sectors to exchange valuable knowledge and technology on both sides of the Atlantic.

ThE Water Streams

Groundwater & Environment

The Groundwater & Environment stream aims to share knowledge, ideas, and solutions between the U.S. and Denmark within progressive geophysical data acquisition methods and appropriate data management for better decision-making.

Denmark has always been very dependent on the groundwater supply, which is very clean, and therefore treatment only includes light filtration and aeration. Over the years, comprehensive legislation has been implemented to protect the groundwater reserve, and advanced geophysical mapping methods have been developed. Today, 40 percent of Denmark’s subsurface is mapped, and the data is used to establish site-specific protection plans and regulations of land use to prevent contamination.

Water Distribution

The Smart Water Distribution stream engages drinking water professionals and innovative technology suppliers to exchange lessons learned on proactive water loss control, pressure management, smart metering, data integration, and demand-driven distribution and solutions for integrated data. 

 The stream focuses on developing integrated systems that use algorithms to increase the performance of the distribution systems by real-time control and automatic analyzing and reporting. The technology is well tested as it has been a key factor in making the Danish water sector one of the best in the world at keeping water loss low. Over the years, tight regulations have initiated technological development and smart solutions, and today, the national water loss is about 7.8 percent, and the sector has an ILI of 0.8.

Sewer Systems

The Sewer Systems stream taps into the new paradigm of a holistic approach to wastewater and rainwater management, considering both the traditional underground infrastructure as well as blue-green surface solutions to solve the issues of increasing rainfall intensities.

There is a significant focus on data and asset management. Monitoring of, i.e., hydrogen sulfide to improve efforts to minimize corrosion and odor is becoming increasingly popular. Using sensors in the system and connecting with online platforms for real-time analytics such as I&I analysis, control, and asset management of the system is helping the utilities to better plan renovations, efforts against SSO and provides improved overviews of the system and its recipients in real-time. This technology is also useful for the many utilities currently centralizing WWTPs. It helps them with the long-term planning to ensure the best ROI when making such fundamental changes to the system.

Wastewater Treatment

The Wastewater stream focuses on solutions to enhance energy efficiency throughout different initiatives within the wastewater treatment process. 

In the past 25 years, the Danish water sector has undergone a huge transition in energy efficiency and resource optimization. Today, the Danish wastewater treatment plants are both energy efficient and energy-producing units.  

Data-driven automation, resource efficiency and recovery, as well as advanced sensor-based biological treatment strategies, are some of the tools that have increased sustainability and reduced OPEX in the Danish sector, and the solutions are very applicable in a U.S. perspective too.
